What is a repeater and what does it do? 2024/05/08

Repeater (RP repeater) is a connecting device working on the physical layer. It is suitable for interconnecting two identical networks, and its main function is to extend the network transmission distance by retransmitting or forwarding data signals. Repeaters are network devices that regenerate and restore signals: physical layer devices of the OSI model.

In the field of communications, a repeater (Repeater) has the following meaning:

1.An analog device that enhances and amplifies an input signal regardless of the type of input signal (whether analog or digital). Repeaters are used to enhance signals on a cable line, sending the signal farther to extend the length of the network. When an electronic signal is transmitted over a cable, the signal strength decreases as the length of the transmission increases. Repeaters are therefore needed to re-enforce the signal to increase the distance over which the information can be sent.

2.A module or device for frequency conversion and power enhancement, such as a repeater satellite, which is divided into an uplink frequency and a downlink frequency and is mainly used for signal enhancement and frequency difference.
